The Career Impact of Science Internships
Research shows science internships help students build confidence, explore careers, and make informed decisions through authentic STEM experiences.
A research article examining the impact of a 7-month science internship program on high school students' career choices—and the findings were remarkable.
More than 90% of participating students reported that the internship experience changed, refined, expanded, or even completely redirected their career aspirations.
Think about that for a moment.
One meaningful work-based learning experience had the power to influence how students viewed their future.
The research found that students developed greater confidence in their abilities through:
✅ Hands-on participation in authentic projects
✅ Direct observation of professionals in the workplace
✅ Feedback and encouragement from mentors
✅ Real-world application of STEM skills and knowledge
These findings reinforce what many of us working in workforce development, youth employment, education, afterschool programming, and career readiness have observed for years:
Students discover possibilities they never knew existed when they are given opportunities to learn by doing.
Career awareness is important.
Career exploration is valuable.
But career experience is transformative.
As schools, nonprofits, employers, workforce boards, community colleges, and youth-serving organizations continue to expand internships, youth employment programs, robotics initiatives, and other work-based learning opportunities, it becomes increasingly important to provide a structured way for students to document experiences, reflect on growth, build professional skills, and connect learning to future career goals.
